Kersten was honored for turning around a program that won a single game in 2013 before his arrival to an above-.500 record this past season (9-8).

“We’ve been steadily moving the program long,” he said. “It’s an honor and certainly humbling to be chosen as Coach of the Year because it’s decided on by fellow coaches.”

“Where the team was in 2012 and where it is today... to get something like this is a reflection of the hard work of the players and assistant coaches.”

Kersten cited assistant coaches Allen Tarsi and Paul Purdy and support from the school administration as two of the biggest reasons for the program's success.

He also noted the ongoing challenge of getting Danbury players to buy into his system, but they're picking it up as the record proves.

“Our philosophy is to play a good man-to-man defense and share the ball offensively. The players have worked extremely hard this year.”
